When the John and Amy Mewhiney Cancer Foundation started raising funds for lung cancer research we wanted to use the money in the most effective way possible. Because lung cancer is almost always detected too late for effective treatment we decided to focus on early detection. Since 2004 the John and Amy Mewhiney Cancer Foundation has donated all funds raised to the John and Amy Mewhiney Fund at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Maryland to help pay for the cost of screening for individuals participating in the International Early Lung Cancer Action Program (IELCAP) trials held there. Screening has been shown to be the most effective way to detect lung cancer at its earliest stages.
