Military personnel have a higher smoking rate and lung cancer rate than the general population. *
The overall smoking rate among active and retired verterans is 33%, with a rate of 33% for Vietnam veterans and 47% for Gulf War veterans. *
Tobacco use among the military is still subsidized by the federal government. *
The overall percentage of the military who have ever smoked is 70%. *
