Please contact your United States representative or senator and ask him or her to urge Congress to hold public hearings on the subject of lung cancer. Lung cancer has never been the specific subject of a Congressional hearing.

Ask that funding be increased for lung cancer research. According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), funding for lung cancer research is a fraction of the amount given to breast, prostate, and colon cancer research although lung cancer kills more people every year than all three of those cancers combined.

You may find your Senator or Representative on the web at the following sites
www.house.gov
www.senate.gov
www.congress.org

Most Senators and Representatives prefer email, faxes, or telephone calls.

The federal suit against the tobacco companies is scheduled to be heard on September 13, 2004. Ask the Attorney General not to agree to any settlement that does not specifically include funding for lung cancer research.

You may download a form letter by clicking here, or create your own. Email it to AskDOJ@usdoj.gov:

The Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) between the individual states' attorneys general and the tobacco companies provided for almost $209 billion to be divided among the states. Please contact your state representative and ask him or her how that money is being used. The Alliance for Lung Cancer Advocacy Support and Education (ALCASE) has been unable to identify any MSA funding that was set aside by any state legislature specifically for lung cancer research or treatment.

You can find the address for your represenatives on your state's web page or at www.statelocalgov.net.
